What is prayer?
Prayer is having a conversation with God. It is talking to and with God and expecting him to talk back whether it is in the form of receiving answers to prayers or him speaking back to you. Prayer is coming to God to acknowledge your frailties and asking for his intervention in matters too great for you to handle. It is also submitting your will to him and asking that his perfect will be done. Praying often creates intimacy with God. A prayer relationship with God is unique to each individual and over time, we become familiar with his mode of responding to us.
Who can pray?
Any one can say a prayer. As Christians have been called to a life of prayer as recorded in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, "Pray without ceasing" (KJV). An unbeliever can pray asking to get to know God and become his child. As a matter of fact even non-Christians do offer prayers to God in desperate situations.
What is the state of your heart?
- Do you have the heart of a child? A child bears no grudges against anyone, even people who hurt them and they are quick to run back to their parents after being reprimanded.
- Are you quick to forgive even when the offender has not asked for forgiveness? Ask God to help you start each day with pre-forgiveness if there is such a word. Keeping this in mind helps you get through each day with a lighter heart and not one burdened with hurt.
- Do you know that you may hurt other people too without their telling you? If you forgive other people, so will you be forgiven even by our heavenly Father.
2. How to receive answers to your prayers
- Pray with the word of God. The Bible has answers to every issue of life. The Bible calls it the more sure
word of prophecy, it cannot fail. Keep reminding God of his promises and he will bring it to fulfilment as written in Isaiah 45:23, "I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear" ( KJV).
- Pray with faith expecting God to answer, "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him" (Hebrews 11:6, KJV).
- Pray with your need in mind and not perfunctory
prayers. It is easier to pour your heart out when there is a need for it and your emotions will be involved. This is heartfelt prayer.
- Be careful with your words after praying. Don't let negative confessions nullify you prayers.
- Wait expecting answers to your prayers and keep believing until you see it.
