Unique Lessons I Have Learnt Since I Became a Mom

Mom holding her baby

If you are reading this post you are either a mom, soon-to-be mom, a caregiver or you must really love babies and their antics. Motherhood can make you deliriously happy and can also make you want to pull your hair out. It is an incredible blessing better experienced than told and I'm sure you know this already. From the time you find out that you are pregnant you begin to imagine how happy your family will be and rightly so! Rarely do we imagine how far we will be stretched, how much we will learn on the job, the workload awaiting us and how much we over-estimate or under-estimate our abilities as the case may be.

I am a stay-at-home mom to one year old boy and it has been an amazing year, full of laughter, tears, joy and wonder. I've also been so overworked that sometimes I need someone to take him off my hands even for a few minutes so that I can refuel. I love every bit of being a mom and I'm trying to enjoy every moment before life happens and he doesn't need me to always be there.

So far, these lessons have stuck with me:

  1. There are no clear cut rules for you, you have to find what works for you. No amount of books read or podcasts listened to can prepare you enough. You just get the gist and move on. You are going to have your own unique experiences so don't try to make your life fit into what you learnt.
  2. Don't be so wrapped up in your chores that you forget to enjoy each day. It is indeed true that your job as a mom will never be done. Take a moment to breathe in your baby's scent, watch him sleep, spend a little more time reading to him, just breathe.
  3. Sacrifice has become a big part of your life and it's not going to end any time you soon.
  4. Always plan ahead, it will give plenty of time to work through emergencies.
  5. Motherhood is indeed a journey not a destination. It is here to stay. There will be different phases
  6. Self-care cannot be over-emphasized. You will have to actively make the time for it. If you are not happy a mom, you are going to dump on every one else. Your baby is too precious for that.
  7. Unsolicited advise especially in a culture such as ours. They mean well but times are changing, just because you raised your baby a certain way does not make it the best. Learn to take it in your stride.
  8. Habits you formed as a young person can impact negatively or positively on you as a mom. I've always been an early bird and it has come in handy now that I need more time to get more things done. I wake up early, get stuff done and sleep when my baby naps in the afternoon.
  9. Your weaknesses become pronounced. It dawn on you to be a better person because you have a responsibility to raise your children to be the best they can be.<
As time goes on and my family increases, I plan to be more present with my kids and less immersed in all the things that need my attention. What about you? What is your experience like? Hit the comment section and let us know, share this post and follow us on Pinterest and Facebook. Thank you!
