Why I Would Choose A Montessori Education For My Kids

Children playing with sensory bins

It's that time of the year again, the fall season is here and a new school year begins. Parents and caregivers are up to a flurry of activities again as school resumes and new pupils are introduced to school for the first time. Many parents have taken their kids to different schools trying to find the right fit for them, some are moving schools while others are returning students. The bottom line is finding a school that can give the education you desire and can afford your kids. For me, it is a Montessori education for my toddler. There are many reasons why I prefer Montessori to traditional education and not to mention the fact that I had a Montessori education too. This article is my opinion, it does not negate traditional education. So let's get down to it, shall we?

What is Montessori education?

It is a child-centred approach to education that was developed more than a century ago by Dr Maria Montessori, an Italian physician. This method is student-led and self-paced while closely guided by their teachers in a nurturing environment. The Montessori approach encourages rigorous self-motivated education in the cognitive, emotional, social and physical growth and development of children.

Their classrooms are often a mixture of multi-aged pupils to help them develop a sense of independence and accountability. They are given opportunities to ask questions, think deeper and make connections. This fosters confidence and enthusiasm. They learn critical thinking, working in collaboration, boldness and integrity. Not just filling them with facts. They get to see, touch and feel what they are being taught. This multi-sensory approach does it for me.

Why I prefer Montessori education

  • Children learn order, independence and concentration at an early age because of the materials used and classroom arrangements. There are a lot of fun activities for kids that help them develop skills and build a foundation for their later years.
  • It encourages a natural love of learning in children. It also emboldens the inquisitive nature of a child and encourages them to find new ways of doing things.
  • The Montessori approach focuses on each child as opposed to teaching many students on the same level. Some are slow learners while others catch on quickly. Here both learning groups can meet their full potential and work at their own pace.
  • Children become encouraged and determined to complete their tasks on their own.
  • Children become eager to go to school every day because of the activities they get to take part in. Dreading to drop them off because of their emotional meltdown is no longer an issue!
These are just a few reasons why I like Montessori education. What about you? Which one do you prefer - Montessori or traditional?
