5 Prayers To Be A Godly Mom That Raises Godly Children

A mom playing with her newborn baby

A woman of godly character is becoming sought after now more than ever. The world around us is seeking to devour our children before our watchful eyes and thinking we can do it all on our own is setting ourselves up for failure. We need the power of God and his presence in our lives and in our homes to make a difference. We need to pray for ourselves asking God to prepare and equip us to raise our kids the way he wants us to. Yes, we moms need prayers too.

Being a godly mother in a world that is increasingly ungodly is a brave decision and a choice that needs a clear direction. It is not enough to want to be a mom that raises godly children, but also do what is needed to bring your expectations to fruition. Being a godly mom is intentional and asking God's help will make our task easier and will free us from feeling overwhelmed knowing that God is even more interested in our children's lives than we are. Getting pregnant and birthing a baby is the first step, we are called to do more for our kids.

Who is a godly mom?

A godly mom is a mother whose heart cry is to bring the purposes of God to bear in the lives of her children. She exhibits godly character or mirrors the attributes of God to her family in a way that draws them closer to God, not farther away from him.

Why be a godly mom?

Some mothers may roll their eyes at having supposedly more workload but it does not have to be that way. Being a godly mom means you will be fulfilling your responsibility and not passing them on to teachers at school or caregivers who will not be as patient or consistent.

No one can love your child the way you can. We see them the way God sees us all - we are aware of their weaknesses and all but we still love them unconditionally at that. This is why a mother's prayer is so important to God. I don't know a mom who will rather leave her children to their whims and caprices, or do you? Showing our children the way to God guides them against regrets at the end of the day and you will be passing on this knowledge for generations to come. Wouldn't that be great?

Prayers to be a godly mom

1. Careful use of words

Lord, please grant me wisdom that I may know what to say, when to say it and how to say it. Let me not speak words that hurt but rather build them up. May my children seek my counsel knowing that I have their best interest at heart in Jesus' name, Amen.

Proverbs 31:26 - She openeth her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

Ephesians 4:29 - Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

2. Self-control

Father, I need your help to have a grasp on my emotions at all times. Guide me not to discipline them as a punitive measure or make rash decisions even if you have to physically restrain me from myself. Give me a heart like yours Lord, in Jesus' name, Amen.

1 Peter 3:4 - But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

Isaiah 26:3 - Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

3. Put God first

Dear Lord, draw me closer to you with each passing day. Help me to consistently put you above everything and may you be the anchor of my life and family all our days in Jesus' name, Amen.

John 15:5 - I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Matthew 22:37-38 - Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.

4. A community of other believers

Father, I know that I need the company of others who are on the same path as me to encourage and build each other up. Guide me to make friends with other faithful moms with whom we will speak the truth, encourage, pray with and for as well as correct one another in Jesus' name, Amen.

Hebrews 10:24-25 - And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Romans 12:4-5 - For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and everyone members one of another.

5. Letting go of the reins

Jesus, deliver me from the trap of trying to be in control of every situation. Let your peace that passes all understanding fill me as I commit my children to you knowing that you are in perfect control at all times. Free me from guilt, perfectionism and anxiety that may rob me of my joy in Jesus' name, Amen.

Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the LORD with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Galatians 1:10 - For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

5 Characteristics of a godly mom

I love your line that says being a godly women means to not outsource the training and care of your kids. Of course the details look a bit different for each family but I’m general I totally agree that mothers are the ones who are primarily responsible for raising teaching and nurturing their children.

Thanks!
