Praying over our children is an activity that should not be taken lightly. Our enemy, the adversary is working hard to deviate them from their God-given purpose and we should also be on our guard and stand in agreement with the word of God for the lives of our children. The future depends so much on how we raise our kids. Jesus said in Luke 23:28, 'But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.' A mother's love for her children is pure and unconditional, this is why a mother's prayer can have huge impacts on the child. This does not mean a father's prayer is not equally effective, in most cases, it is the mom who bears the burden of praying for her kids.
Praying for your kids will enforce the will of God in their lives and because we cannot be with them everywhere and at all times, we can trust God who is omniscient to keep them out of harm's way and to help them to always make the right choices. It is also at the top of every mother's concern that her child be saved and early too. As parents, there is so much that is out of our control. We can do our best with intentional parenting but there is only so much we can do.
Why pray for your kids?
- God is always on the lookout for people who are seeking him and if we don't seek his face in prayer, destruction is the resultant effect. Ezekiel 22:30 says, 'And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. Praying for your kids puts a hedge of protection over them that wouldn't be there otherwise.
- Another reason we desperately need to pray is found in 1 Peter 5:8, 'Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.' Our kids will become the devil's prey if we do nothing about it. Our adversary is always on the lookout and we can be sure that his plans are no good.
- Lastly, there is the promise of answers as found in Isaiah 49:25, 'But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.' There it is, the assurance we all need to know as we seek him in faith.
Why pray the scriptures?
There are times we pray as God impressed the need in our hearts and other times we need to hold God to his promises. He said in Isaiah 55:11, 'So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.' The scriptures also record the word of God as the more sure word of prophecy in 2 Peter 1:19, 'We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed...' We need to keep reminding God to keep his word after all, he made the promise!
