Empowering Prayers For Your Son Through The Stages Of Life
Recent happenings have brought to light the futility of allowing boys to grow wild because 'boys will always be boys' as the popular saying goes. In Nigeria and a greater part of Africa, having a boy child means you have solidified your position as the wife of the home, you will not be sent packing by relatives and will not have to bear your husband being married to another woman who can bear him male children. This stereotype is gradually fading away as many of the boys that were deemed important have turned out to fall short of the mark while their female counterparts have outshone them.
Many mothers have come to realise that bearing sons alone is not enough. Society has seen enough of wife battery, rape incidents, soaring crime rates and bone-chilling ritual killings. We need more intentional parenting, discipline, positive influence in our sons' lives and God's help to guide us as we do our part and leave what is beyond us to him.
Children are precious gifts from God and we have been given the privilege to stand watch over them and affect their lives for the better through prayers. Though we are more inclined to worry about them as we usually do from time to time, use this collection of prayers and bookmark it for future use as you pray for your sons through the different stages of growth and development.
1. Praying for your unborn son
Heavenly Father, thank you for this special gift of a son you have lovingly granted to us. Thank you for making our marriage fruitful and causing us to overflow with joy. We commit this unborn child to you, knowing that everything we commit into your hands you can keep. We ask Lord that you perfect his every growth stage, that he will develop fully and perfectly to your glory. There will be no problems of any kind, and his birth will bring us joy and not sorrow because he will be born healthy and complete; not diseased and needing more care. We ask that you go ahead of us to the day of his birth and perfect that day to your glory in Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
Scriptures to pray over your unborn son:
Genesis 1:27 - So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Proverbs 10:22 - The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.
2 Timothy 1:12 - ... for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he can keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
2. Praying for your son from toddler through childhood years
Father, we thank you for this miracle that we continue to watch as it blossoms before our eyes, thank you for perfect health and growth spurts. We are awed by the responsibility we have to keep him safe, protected, and provided for and constantly bathe him in prayers so we ask that you keep us fresh and flourishing in your court so we do not fail in our responsibilities. We pray that as our son becomes more curious and explores the world around him, you will ensure his safety from accidents that can mar him for life. Give him a love for you, his family and his friends and protect him from people who can molest him or take advantage of his innocent and trusting nature. Build a hedge of protection around him and may he continue to grow in wisdom, stature and in favour with you and man in Jesus' name, Amen.
Scriptures to pray over your toddler and young son:
Job 21:9 - Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.
Proverbs 14:26 - In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.
Luke 2:52 - And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
3. Praying for your son from his teenage years through young adulthood
Lord, you have watched over our son from the very beginning and continue to do so even now. We ask that as he begins to strike out on his own, you will always remind him that he is never alone. Let his faith in you be his anchor as he navigates the paths of life. Endow him with love for learning and give him a teachable spirit. Give him wisdom, courage and discernment as he makes his choices of friends, career path and role models. May he not reject sound judgement or allow himself to be influenced by the ungodliness around him but always choose the way of life that honours you. I pray that he will honour you with his gifts and talents and grow into a young man with the strength of character. Help him to have a good work ethic and a growing sense of purpose in this world in Jesus' name, Amen.
Scriptures to pray over your teenage and young adult son:
Psalms 112:2 - His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
Isaiah 62:12 - And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken.
Matthew 5:14 - Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.
4. Praying for your adult son
Father, we thank you for our son ................ You have not failed us through the years as we continually lift him in prayer to you. Thank you for the fine specimen of a young man he has become, we would never have made it through the years without you. We pray that as his responsibilities grow, his walk with you will deepen, may he be strong enough in you to lay hold of the inheritance of freedom that was bought for him on the cross and be firmly grounded in you. We ask that he will marry the wife you have for him and may his marriage be godly and produce the godly seed that you desire. Let him have the courage to provide leadership for his home, provide for the needs of his family and raise his children by your precepts. May he be the man you created him to be all the days of his life in Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
Scriptures to pray over your adult son:
Revelation 5:9 - And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation.
Isaiah 8:18 - Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.
Isaiah 54:17 - No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.
