5 Powerful Back To School Prayers For Your Kids

Children dressed in school uniform running back yo school

The fall is almost here and the long holiday will soon be a memory. Parents are preparing for the financial toll the new school term will take on the family - tuition, bus fare, books, backpacks, sandals, lunch, snacks... The list goes on. While it is necessary to have our affairs in order before the schools are back in session, it is also important that we cover our kids in prayers too. Don't you agree?

As a mom, I know that I cannot always be with my child but I know someone who can, God. I can trust him to watch over my kid and keep him from harm and I like to pray ahead of time before the need arises. Deuteronomy 31:3 says, 'The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said' (Emphasis is mine). There are so many temptations the enemy throws at our children and I like to envisage God clearing the path for them long before they have to pass that way whether they are new studentsreturning students or moving schools.

In this post, you will find prayers to speak over your children and they are not exhaustive. We have also included some Bible verses for you to meditate on. Let them serve as a guide as the Spirit leads you to cover more areas of your children's lives.

Back to school prayers for your kids

Protection

Father, I commit my children into your hands as they return to school. I ask that you will build a hedge of protection around them and keep them from accidents as they ply the roads, diseases, bullying and injury as they play. I also ask that you keep them from any other physical, mental end emotional abuse that can mar their lives. Bless their going out and their coming in, in Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Psalms 91:10 - There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Isaiah 54:17 - No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.

Love and acceptance

Lord, please fill my children's hearts with your love and give them an understanding of how complete and deep your love is and help us parents to mirror your unconditional love to them in a way that they understand. As they resume the new term, I pray that they will be loved and accepted by their peers and teachers and not have to face the crippling fear of rejection. May they find favour before you and other people and also be able to express love to other people in a manner that is appropriate in Jesus' name, Amen.<

Romans 8:38-39 - For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 John 4:16 - And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

Godly friends and role models

Lord, bring godly friends to my children and help them look up to people who fear you; may they not compromise their faith in a bid to be accepted rather, deliver them from people with ungodly character so that they will not learn their ways. Take away loneliness and low self-esteem from them that can cause them to seek out friends that do not glorify you in Jesus' dear name I pray, Amen.

2 Corinthians 6:14-16 - Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye is the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Proverbs 13:20 - He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

Love for learning

Lord, I pray that you will instil a desire to learn in my children, and help them to acquire knowledge and skill with joy. May they not become fools by turning away from knowledge. May they respect the wisdom of their parents and teachers that you bring their way. Choose their teachers and keep them from people who will make learning a bad experience for them. I ask that you also give them the joy of learning more about you in Jesus' name, Amen.

Proverbs 2:2 - So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding.

Isaiah 54:13 - And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD, and great shall be the peace of thy children.

Their gifts and talents

Father, I pray that you will develop my children's gifts and talents and use them for your glory. Make it apparent to us how we can encourage and nurture them. Give them a revelation of what you have placed in them and how to use them according to your will; may they not spend a lifetime trying to find their way through life. May they not waste their gifts and talents or use them for purposes that don't glorify you, Lord. May they always find their expression in you in Jesus' powerful name I pray, Amen.

1 Corinthians 7:7 - For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.

Romans 11:29 - For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
